Semana De Cultura Festival

India is a mingling of diverse cultures, all special in their own way. Goa too has its own rich art and culture which is a blend of Indian and western nuances. Even though the Indian armed forces liberated Goa in 1961, the fusion between the culture of the colonist and colonizer is still evident in Goa's food, music, dance, architecture, laws and even language.  Goa has assimilated the essence of both regions where people coexist in harmony and joy. Its playful ambience has not spilled over its art and culture.

Goa is known for cheerful celebrations and plethora of fun festivals. It is the bridge between the east and the west. Semana de Cultura was set up in 2008 as an NGO to promote Goan culture. Goan culture has Portuguese culture ingrained in it. Literally translated as Indo-Portuguese Week cultural week the festival was initiated to celebrate the unique Goan fusion culture and Goan identity honed over 451 years of Portuguese rule.

It is a blend which has taught Goans to live in unity and harmony, irrespective of their caste, creed and social status. Through this event, people share and enjoy the essence of our diverse culture and keep the unique Goan identity alive. Places like Fort Tiracol, one of the best beach in Goa Festivals like these are especially relevant in these times when swift demographic changes are threatening to drive the uniqueness of Goan culture to extinction.

The festival goes on through November and goes till December, the best time to be there, in one of the best. Relish Goa’s archaic past with authentic Portuguese food, music and films. Going to Goa’s beautiful churches is a must as well when looking at Goan Tourist places to visit.

Fort Tiracol-Times Gone By

Terekhol Fort or Fort Tiracol is a fort in Goa, India. It is located on the northern tip of Goa at the mouth of the Tiracol River. Fort Tiracol can be reached by a ferry from Querim that is 42 km North of Panaji. The origin of the name stems out from the Marathi word ‘tri-khol’ which literally translates into a steep river-bank. Fort Tiracol was originally built by Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle in the 17th century. The site selected gave a commanding view of the Arabian Sea.

A considerable fleet of native vessels which sheltered in the Tiracol River were kept. The fort at the outset consisted of 12 guns, a barrack and a chapel. In 1746, the Portuguese under the 44th Viceroy of Goa waged war against the Raja of Sawantwadi. Several conflicts on land followed and Fort Tiracol was finally surrendered to the Portuguese.

Fort Tiracol was a symbolic location where freedom fighters from Goa demonstrated from time to time. A Church for the Holy Trinity was constructed in the fort courtyard. This later became the century old Church of St. Anthony. The church is not open to the general public except on certain occasions, such as the annual feast.

Now, in a state of ruins, Fort Tiracol has been converted into a hotel, the Tiracol Fort Heritage Resort and it is one of the major heritage village hotels in Goa. The hotel overlooks the beautiful lake and houses bespoke restaurants that offer scrumptious Konkan delicacies. If you are ever in Goa, do not miss the chance to visit Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel and experience the best of Goa.
